Wedding dress trends 2019: the meringue is back

Laura Hampson talks to Kate Halfpenny about what all the brides will be wearing down the aisle next year

As the world waits in anticipation to see what Meghan Markle will be wearing on Saturday – the day of her wedding to Prince Harry – one thing we know for sure is that the style of her dress will be replicated by brides the world over.

When Kate Middleton married Prince William in 2011, her Grace Kelly-inspired long-sleeve, high neck lace dress became a trend almost immediately – and long sleeve dresses still remain popular now, seven years on.

To see what the biggest wedding dress trends of 2018 and 2019 are and will be, we visited bridal designer Kate Halfpenny in her gorgeous Halfpenny London boutique.

What are this year’s most sought-after silhouettes?

Halfpenny told the Standard: “This year, the silhouette trend has been very much the fit and flare. Body skimming dresses that burst at the bottom. Not the classic mermaid but still embracing curves.”

Do you think we will see a resurgence of coloured wedding dresses?

“I don’t see a huge amount of colour coming through, but lots of texture and detail and prints you potentially wouldn’t imagine in a wedding dress coming through.”

What is your favourite wedding dress style this season?

“My favourite style this season that we’ve done is really very simple; a rounded, strapless, fit and flare matte stretch dress with a big overskirt that opens at the front as an addition. So you can have that big silhouette, but then you can take it off for the reception. It’s a timeless silhouette.”

What silhouette do you think will be most popular in 2019?

“Silhouettes that are going to be big in 2019 … I think the meringue is coming back. My new collection that we’re launching in October in New York is pretty much all big silhouettes, I just think it’s time that that made its comeback. I’m ready.”

What is your advice for brides who want to look on-trend but also timeless?

“Forget all the trends, forget everything like that and choose something that’s totally yours.”
