Tens of thousands of people are currently returning to civilisation, following nine days in Nevada's Black Rock Desert for the annual Burning Man event.

Created in 1986 when just 35 people attended the spiritual gathering that promotes self-expression, in recent years Burning Man has soared in popularity, with nearly 70,000 people enjoying the art installations, music, creative costumes and wild partying in recent years.

Burning Man has also built up quite the celebrity fan base, with Karlie Kloss, Paris Hilton, Heidi Klum and Alessandra Ambrosio attending this year's festivities. All of whom brought their best 'party in the desert' outfits.

If you thought festival style was impressive, you're about to see that Burning Man is a completely different ball game. From goggles to glitter and striking stomping boots, here are four trends that ruled the Black Rock Desert.

1. Goggles

We're used to seeing party-ready headpieces or, for those familiar with Coachella's dusty conditions, balaclavas, but goggles? That's definitely a new one.

Part fashion statement, part necessity, the chunky goggles were a firm fave with the fashion set.

Everyone from supermodel Heidi Klum to influencer Lizzy Perridon wore the sporty piece of eyewear with various embellished twists.

2. Silver Spaceman

2018's Burning Man theme was 'I, Robot', which explains a lot about the metallic, futuristic OOTDs which have been hitting our feeds.

From disco ball-inspired one-legged jumpsuits to corsets, hot pants and mini dresses, silver was the hue to have.

3. Platform Boots

As for footwear? The sandy ground was covered with platform space boots.

Again, very much a staple for trekking through the desert, this year nearly everyone opted for a sturdy pair of knee-high platform boots, which came complete with lace-up and buckle details.

In fact, so many women wore them (including Alessandra Ambrosio) that they were pretty much Burning Man uniform. Both practical and perfect for wherever the day rave took you.

4. The New Neon

Unsurprisingly, perhaps thanks to Kim K's recent penchant for the eye-catching colour, neon green was the hue to have at this year's nine-day event.

From slime green boots to skimpy bikinis, there was no missing the trend. It also gave the added bonus of being easily visible in the surroundings, after all, the desert is one place you do not want to get lost.
