There's no doubt that the fashion industry is heading towards a more ethical future.

As well as an ongoing battle again plastic waste to enhance sustainability, animal cruelty has also been top of the agenda in 2018 with Chanel being the latest heavyweight to show its alliance to the cause.

Following in the footsteps of Burberry, Versace and Gucci (to name but a few), the French fashion house has announced that it will be going fur-free.

The luxury label has also taken things one step further by also removing the use of exotic skins such as snakeskin and crocodile from its collections.

Chanel told WWD on Monday that it will: "No longer use exotic skins in our future creations”. A statement that has already been praised by animal rights group PETA.

"After decades of PETA pressure, @ChanelOfficial has banned fur and exotic skins from their collections 2018 is THE YEAR for designers coming out of the stone age!".

Creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, has said of the change: “We did it because it’s in the air, but it’s not an air people imposed to us. It’s a free choice.”

And, one look at the Chanel website shows that the ban is immediate and if you search 'snakeskin', 'python' or 'lizard' no matches are found.

Other labels, including Asos, Nike, H&M, Puma, Arcadia Group and L Brands, have already banned exotic skins from their lines, though Chanel is the first luxury brand to do so.
