Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld has embarked on a new and ambitious venture: designing a 20-storey hotel in Macau

Karl Lagerfeld has announced that he will be designing a hotel in southern China.

The Chanel creative director will turn his stylish hand to design a 20-storey tower which will open in 2017. The hotel will be located in the Lisboa Palace complex in Macau, the only place in the country where gambling is legal.

In a statement, the 80-year-old said: "An entire hotel designed by me. It's the first time for me! I think the idea is great!"

Lagerfeld, told WWD that the hotel will be a fusion of modern and 19-century style. He intends to add his personal and creative touch to every room: “You know, Gabrielle Chanel always said, ‘I only make dresses I would wear.’ And I make only rooms where I would like to sleep. It’s as simple as that. When I do a thing like this I think, ‘Would you live there or not? Do you want to wake up there? Do you think the bathroom is comfortable?’ It’s very childish thinking, but, you know, it’s like the song ‘My Way’.”

The hotel will not be Karl’s first departure from fashion. Last year, the maverick redesigned the pool area at Monaco’s Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo, complete with a modern installation of The Iliad and The Odyssey. In 2011, he revamped the look of coke bottles, using a pink colour scheme and putting his iconic silhouette on the label. The same year, Lagerfeld also directed the Magnum ice cream campaign starring actress Rachel Bilson.

With 270 rooms for Lagerfeld to fill with some of his signature styles (we’re thinking quilted pillows, chain trims, monochrome colour schemes, tweed bed spreads and Chanel No5 air freshener), there will be plenty of room for all his celebrity friends to stay.

Here are some of our dream suites:

Chambre for Cara: Cara Delevingne’s room would reference her quirky style and urban fashion choices. Maybe brightly coloured CC monograms on the neon tweed duvet covers, with a Chanel beanie for every guest rather than a bath robe.

Keira’s Kingdom: Keira Knightley’s room would be an oasis of simplicity and elegance, just like her. Perhaps Karl will use accents of lace and tulle, emulating that chic 50s style she loves so much.

Boudoir for Blake: Blake Lively’s bedroom would be ultra-glam like her character in Gossip Girl, with sequin covered-pillows and beaded bed spreads.

Vanessa’s Paradise: Vanessa Paradis’ room would be a French bohemian’s paradise with eclectic fabrics, patterns and colour.

Tilda’s quarters: Tilda Swinton’s room would feature asymmetrical furniture, contorted pillows, and long draped curtains.
