Gareth Southgate has been offered a lifetime’s supply of waistcoats if England beat Sweden in Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final.

The England boss has become an unlikely style icon thanks to his new touchline uniform of a waistcoat, shirt and striped tie – part of Marks & Spencer’s official three-piece suit designed for the tournament with the Football Association.

The navy waistcoat has won a legion of fans and become the subject of countless memes.

Ahead of tomorrow’s match against Sweden, cult London brand Sir Plus has offered to reward Southgate with unlimited waistcoats if England makes it through to the semi-finals.

Henry Hales, the brand’s founder, said: “I’m so impressed with Southgate’s performance, and with his choice of attire. If we make it through to the semi-finals, the waistcoats are on us. Hopefully we’ll be seeing him in our Portobello Road store very soon.”

Founded in 2010, Sir Plus uses surplus and eco-friendly fabrics to craft menswear, and has long been a champion of the waistcoat.

“We started making waistcoats from surplus pieces of wool that were too small for tailors to make into jackets,” says Hales. “Over the years our aesthetic has evolved and become more casual, but our single and double breasted waistcoats have always remained some of our best-sellers.”

“Many of our customers will pick one up to wear over a simple grandad shirt – another speciality of ours – for a more laid-back vibe that still looks smart,”

Last year Sir Plus opened its first permanent store behind its usual market pitch on Portobello Road, housing its full collection of Nehru jackets, grandad shirts and formal waistcoats.

It’s probably about time Southgate paid them a visit.

Sir Plus is open seven days a week at 306A Portobello Road, London, with the full range available at sirplus.co.uk.
