Giambattista Valli couture showcase unveils a sweetie jar of painstakingly created treats in Paris

But this wasn't all about eveningwear, Valli had some day wear up his sleeve too

If Paris's haute couture week is a coalition formed between high brow fashion houses and plucky new contenders intent on delivering bank busting gowns to the super rich, last night belonged to the new establishment.

And specifically to Giambattista Valli who closed the first full day of proceedings with a showcase which offered up plentiful options for big spenders on the search for a trophy gown.

Staged against the backdrop of the prestigious Palais Royal, Valli unveiled realms of taffeta and bubblegum plissé to a front row of adoring clients that included the Canadian singer Celine Dion.

Fusing everything from choir boy ruffles to gob stopper diamonds and supersized taffeta shoulders together in an offering that was at no point backwards in coming forwards, the Italian born designer unveiled a sweetie jar of painstakingly created treats for a woman who likes her fashion best when it stands out from the crowd.

As has become standard practice for Valli, a designer who commands near superstar status among the society set, the dresses got bigger with every exit- Valli kicked off with a blouson sleeve capelet that wouldn't have looked out of place in the court of Henry the Eighth and ending with a series of tiered taffeta mushroom gowns which are a ‘Giamba’ couture signature.

This was also a lesson in dressing the yacht classes with floating Grecian gowns in eau de nil and mauve among the prettiest inclusions- some featured billowing flowing cape trims and served to remind those in attendance that rich people got chilly too.

But this wasn't all about eveningwear, Valli had some day wear up his sleeve too. Albeit daywear designed for those who find a need in their 9 till 5s for dip-dyed fur coats splayed with beads and two-tier velvet cocktail gowns.
