He’s known for mega red carpet moments and seventies-inflected fabulousness, but this week British American designer Harris Reed makes a move for our off-duty wardrobes with the launch of a new loungewear label, Fluid Basics.

The clothes will be available sometime in December, though an exact date is still to be confirmed. Campaign shots show staple tanks and t-shirts in a chocolate brown, black and white with carefully positioned logo labels sewn on the fronts of vest straps, and tie up at the back. Elsewhere blazers come with 70’s-inspired lapels and wrap-tie waists, while flares are made in jersey for stage-ready slacks made comfy.

“I wanted to open up the world of Harris Reed, by making a more accessible and wearable collection, for those who want to live out their fluid fantasy every day,” Reed says. “I reimagined wardrobe staples, and created something totally new and authentically Harris Reed. Creating Fluid Basics helps further my message; fighting for the beauty of fluidity.”

The brand marks a new direction for the American designer who rose to acclaim whilst studying at Central Saint Martins. Having caught the attention of stylist Harry Lambert during his early years of education, the designer began dressing Harry Styles before interning at Gucci under the creative direction of Alessandro Michele.

Since graduating in 2020, Reed has launched an eponymous brand showing a demi-couture collection during February’s 2021 London Fashion Week, before his debut show at the Serpentine Gallery for the SS22 collections.

He has also produced a range of non-seasonal offerings which Fluid Basics will join. The H-boot, mega platforms that come in zebra print and glitter, came in November 2020 and has been worn by the likes of Miley Cyrus. In February this year, a Harris Reed X MAC makeup line was introduced, and September saw the release of a jewellery collection, all pendants and pearls, with Missoma. Busy? You could say.

But this new step into loungewear, priced between £111- £276, hints at more to come in terms of reachable Harris Reed designs for the average customer. And it marks the foundations of a modern brand that has a broader scope than the traditional season-show-season structure.

Fluid Basics will launch in December and will be available from from Bergdorf Goodman, MATCHESFASHION and Le Bon Marché.
