How the velour tracksuit became fashionable again

Hannah Rochell5 December 2017

Welcome to the Noughties, everyone! Because thanks to Vetements’ collaboration with Juicy Couture last year, the velour tracksuit is firmly back on our fashion radar.

Such is the fervour surrounding this soft suit’s resurrection that last month it was announced that Juicy Couture, the label whose velvety loungewear was loved by turn-of-the-century celebrities including Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, and which turned 20 this year, is getting its own scripted TV series on E!

The drama - called Juicy Stories - is set in Nineties Los Angeles and will be based on the brand’s founders Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor. We’re not making this up, honest.

Anyway, don’t panic; you don’t have to watch the show and it’s not all bumster flares and cropped zip tops in bubblegum pink and Disney princess turquoise this time around.

Think slouchy sets from labels such as Weekday, adidas Originals, Fila and Nike in millennial-friendly shades of pale pink, claret and dusky teal - ideal attire for Twixmas lounging while eating turkey curry and scoffing the soft centres languishing at the bottom of the Roses tin.

Or perhaps you’ve been thinking you’d love to wear tailored velvet trousers on Christmas Day but long for an expandable waistband, in which case head to Me + Em for its chic velour joggers in a seasonal shade of merlot, which do the job nicely. Even Juicy Couture itself has a similar navy pair with an accompanying jaunty red-striped top. If jumpsuits are more your vibe, though, H&M is touting a dark blue velour hooded all-in-one. Yeah, it’s basically a onesie but it’s about as luxe as onesies get.

Speaking of luxe, Preen by Thornton Bregazzi’s winter collection (below) boasts ruched skirts and dresses in the tactile fabric, as well as a technicolour sweatshirt to wear with them, so that’s your incredibly comfortable eveningwear sorted for New Year’s Eve.

It’s not just womenswear getting on board with the trend; cult mod favourite Fred Perry (below) has released a capsule collection with Last Shadow Puppets frontman Miles Kane, which includes a black velour jacket and matching trousers - the ideal suit for a work do that’s more Old Blue Last than Old Street Tech City.

Nice touch.
