In-your-face earrings

10 April 2012

Unless you've got the same taste in clothes as, say, Lady Gaga, your current outfit choices probably focus on a few components: a pair of jeans or khaki-coloured cargo pants, a silk blouse or T-shirt in an inoffensive shade of cream, and a discreet ankle boot.

Such is the power of minimalism, the most influential trend to occupy our high street since the dawn of the skinny jean. So our sudden penchant for gargantuan earrings in a host of styles, shapes and colourways - imagine Pat Butcher's without the zirconia - is quite literally a head scratcher.

Championed by Gossip Girl Hilary Duff, who favours an oversized-disc style, and the unashamedly in-your-face Nicki Minaj, who appeared in the capital last week wearing a pair of plastic violet hoops the size of grapefruit, the trend for lairy earrings is a strong contender for unlikeliest success story of the season.

Fancy cheering up your cargo pants with a pair? Dare to wear House of Holland's fluffy hoops, which arrive in store next week. So wrong they're right? Or just plain terrifying? Answers on a postcard, please.
