With a front row hosting the likes of Nancy Kissinger, Barbara Walters and Taylor Swift, it was clear before the lights even dipped that the Oscar de la Renta show is one of the most important on the New York Schedule.

And while a Beyonce/Kardashian/screaming-baby-North guest list may have that flashbulb factor, the very fact that this show was attended by such timeless faces of America is, in itself, a tribute to the iconic and ageless work that the late Oscar de la Renta did in his four decades of dressing women so beautifully.

Before the designers passing in October last year he appointed his own successor in Peter Copping, 48-year-old British designer who has a 20-year career history in fashion, most recently as designer for Nina Ricci.

In a heartfelt note left on the seats of his audience, Copping wrote "I am immensely proud to have been chosen as the creative director of Oscar de la Renta."

Writing of the 82-year-old's death last year, the successive designer noted "Unfortunately things did not go according to our plans and I never had the chance to work with Oscar, which is something I deeply regret."

The fact that Peter Copping's succession of the brand was decided by its namesake - as well as the smiling front row attendee, Annette de la Renta - gives the takeover a harmonious and respectful feel, depicted through the designs on display last night.

The sensitive debut saw a runway filled with full-skirted gowns, smartly-put-together two pieces and killer cocktail dresses, all channelling an array of bold hues that spanned a wide yet romantic colour palette.

As if the show weren't already a talking point, Copping followed suit of fellow designers Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, Dona Karan, Diane Von Furstenberg and Alexander Wang in the inclusion of a certain Miss Jenner.

Kendall showed off her versatility after a number of edgier shows, as she walked the elegant runway in strapless, deep purple gown with floral embellishment. With her hair scraped back, the model's delicate décolletage was unfussy and without decorative jewellery, putting sole focus on the floor-sweeping piece.

A debut show for Copping at the fashion house that bodes well for the future.
