Taking the Mickey: mouse ears are in vogue

Wearing cat or rabbit ears is so passé — it’s time to channel your inner mouse, says Susannah Butter

It takes a lot to make Lady Gaga look mousy. But this weekend, on her way to a performance at the Camden Roundhouse, she finished off her spectacular monochrome outfit with a round, fluffy pair of ears. And she’s not the only one looking very mice indeed by channelling the most famous rodent couple, Mickey and Minnie.

Miley Cyrus referenced her Disney Channel past with a mouse-ear hairdo in that raunchy VMAs performance, while Rita Ora wore a huge pair on the front of Elle magazine, and everyone from Cara Delevingne to Georgia May Jagger and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have been seen in them.

We’ve had an earful — from polka-dot versions to the classic plain black. Cat ears are a bit passé and rabbits have Playboy bunny associations, but mouse ears seem somehow cheery.

Victoria Beckham even joined the fun by tweeting a picture of herself with some superimposed Minnie Mouse ears, complete with polka-dot ribbon. Why should her daughter Harper be the only one to enjoy this look?

In fact, this look has its origins in high fashion. Miu Miu and Louis Vuitton customised ranges for a shoot in LOVE magazine and Maison Michel, the French label now owned by Chanel, does a range of PVC mouse ear rain hats. Rihanna is a fan.

This is not just a celebrity fad. They have hit the high street. Asos.com does a black mouse ear hat (£15), and a jewelled version (£8). Topshop also has a great pair, complete with pearl trim that would make Minnie envious (£12).

We are all ears to see who will wear them next.
