Valentino gives playful twist to little black dress

Searching for the perfect little black dress? Look no further than Valentino's latest offering, unveiled in Paris. The haute couture show, attended by Liz Hurley and Natalia Vodianova, featured 42 outfits — almost half of them black dresses.

In what looked like an attempt to attract a younger customer to Valentino — a fashion house that has long been considered the most traditional when it comes to couture — the show had a distinctly girlie feel. Satin-bows were used as finishing touches, while other dresses featured playful ruffles and sheer sleeves. One thigh-skimming black dress boasted a giant appliqué rose.

And although the black served as constant punctuation, it was not without bursts of colour. Whimsical pastel hues of pale-peppermint and baby-pink sat next to ivory and shimmering metallic, and head designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli delighted loyal customers with a number of options in signature red.

The show marked a return to form for the house, and the start of a bright new future.
