Victoria Beckham is a designer for the digital age. A shrewd self publicist who understands the direct link between an online presence and cash in the till, her brand blossoms in harmony with Instagram likes.

This morning, unveiling her latest autumn collection at London’s Tate Britain, the former Spice Girl went to new lengths to draw a switched on consumer to the Victoria Beckham brand. Launching her own YouTube channel, a platform set to house specially created content for the social media savvy generation, Beckham began an inclusive new chapter. The show, the first piece of live content to be broadcast, was projected onto the screens of Piccadilly Circus as confirmation of this holistic new approach.

Beckham, whose brand spans ready to wear, accessories and a newly launched makeup line, has plans to appeal to every woman. The new collection, a lesson in wardrobing for the contemporary consumer, is confirmation of this plan - Beckham’s approach is not to offer a singular aesthetic or idea but to deliver wearable building blocks.

“I think of this collection as the a-z of a woman's life. Each look feels like a different scene, a different insight into her day” she said backstage.

Beckham, who sported a neat fitting sweater and blouse from the collection to today’s showcase, described her vision as “clothes for a lady who’s not always lady-like”.

It was a succinct description for a collection that saw the designer return to her signature bodycon silhouette with sheath style pencil skirts, camel coats and peep-toe stiletto boots.

Loaded with options, these were clothes to work and play in. And it was when work and play collided that Beckham hit a sweet spot.

A cream wool skirt suit sporting a graphic check print was lent a playful flourish through the addition of leopard print boots while fluffy argyle knitwear, included to feel “proper but not prim”, came teamed with sharp pencil skirts. “She’s quite naughty, this girl” confirmed Beckham. There was a gentleness to her too. Understated, predominantly black, evening wear, included billowing slip dresses, embroidered lace sheath dresses and the perfectly tailored tuxedo.

Beckham also used colour to add a lightness to the collection.

Accents of lipstick-red and neon ensured the show made for compelling viewing, both for those watching via their small screen and from the front row.
