7 ways ways to reach wellness and enlightenment this summer

With summer finally approaching, here are some tips as to how to grow a strong mind and positive attitude

The nature of the summer season brings longer days, warmer weather and a radiant golden glow.

As we see the sun rising earlier in the morning and standing higher in the sky at noon we need to be mindful of the inherent response occurring within ourselves and guide it accordingly. A self-care routine full of mindful breathing will be the best practice for cultivating a strong mind and naturally beautiful skin for the hot summer months.

Here, we share seven ways to achieve seasonal wellness and enlightenment.

1. Find your morning calm

In the morning stillness, with your eyes closed, listen inwardly and acknowledge how each part of your body feels today. Take a few deep breaths to clear your mind,be thankful and give any pains some attention to understand what you need. With this inner peace, connect to your power that allows you to be a light. Open your eyes and begin your day rooted in love and kindness to yourself and others.

2. Meditate for beauty

A beauty breath is a simple technique you can do anywhere at anytime. Sit up straight, inhale for ten seconds, hold for ten, and exhale for ten seconds and do this for about three minutes. Breathe through your entire body filling more and more from your head to your toes with every inhale, visualising yourself with a healthy glow. Ground yourself in thoughts where you see the beauty in yourself and everything around you. Continue for another few breaths as you look around.

3. Learn something

Cognitive activity is vital to maintaining your mental health.Try a flower arrangement class to connect with nature's blossoms, listen to a speaker’s experience of travel to see the world through his eyes, or choose a book that challenges the way you think about science or spirituality. Anything, be playful.

4. Go to a farmers' market

Fresh ingredients, herbs and sweet summer fruits will aid in flushing toxins from your body while giving your head a little lift. Certain foods, like blueberries and rosemary, will help to focus your mind and allow you to think more clearly, while light foods and bitter vegetables such as arugula, cucumber and summer squash will aid digestion on especially warm days. We love the one in Pimlico Square every Saturday morning - it has some amazing seasonal options that then guide our cooking for the week.

5. Hydrate

Perhaps the most important element to maintaining electrolyte balance, a clear mind and youthful looking skin is to stay hydrated. If you’re a little behind in your three litres of water a day, try a glass of raw coconut water or this simple recipe for an added spark..

In a large jug ( approx. 60oz or 170cl) of still spring water, or alkaline if possible:

- 1 tablespoon of aloe vera juice

- ½ organic lemon, sliced

- ¼ organic cucumber, sliced

- A fresh sprig of mint

6. Wear light clothing

Being mindful even about the clothes you wear will help lighten your breath as you go through the day. When you wear white, light grey and blue colours in silks and quality cotton, you will feel like you are flowing with the season, just as nature intended.

7. Yoga

The most beneficial asanas (yoga poses) in summer are hip-opening asanas like Pigeon pose and Bound Angle pose which help you release stress and cool down heat from the body. Try to practice outside in an open space to help you feel more grounded and connected to the earth, keep your gaze soft and be playful with your flow. In summer, simple sun salutations and breathing meditations can be used to become more joyful, less fearful, and more balanced, to create more clarity and increase decision making skills.
