The Mod look is back but it’s a bit rougher around the edges. Say hello to the Mob, girls

Move over, Middleton. Step aside Sears. There’s a new hairspiration in town — in the shape of none other than Bradley Wiggins.

I kid you not. But before you run screaming from a pair of stick-on sideburns faster than you can scream “Wiggoooo-o-o-o”, consider that it is his essence — rather than his short back and sides — which is now being channelled by the hottest heads in London.

Ladies, say hello to the Mob. The mid-length, mussed up, Sixties-style indie bob which surely the Modfather of cycling would approve.

“We’re moving away from those long, floaty, pretty styles that everyone from Kate Middleton to Kim Sears wears, towards a much more mod-ish look when it comes to hair,” explains Jon Withrington, manager of RUSH’s Kensington salon.

Indeed, everyone from the model of the moment, Arizona Muse, to Pixie Lott and Keira Knightley has been snapped with the style. “I’ve done loads of them recently,” says session stylist Chris Appleton, who works out of The Studio. “It is a very Mod-ish Sixties-inspired cut, all Bardot texture and Jackie O body, where there is volume on the crown but flatness at the front of the hairline.”

However, unlike those glamorous touchstones, this take on the style has a rougher finish and choppy end-lengths to make it look as though you’ve (rather successfully) dabbled in a little DIY hairdressing. “Those blunt, uneven ends are key to creating this cut’s up-to-date dishevelled feel,” adds Chris. “Apart from the ends there isn’t much layering involved, as you don’t want to shatter the shape of what is a simple, almost one-length cut,” says Karine Jackson, former London Hairdresser of the Year. “We’re already doing about six a week but it’s going to get even more popular, as it’s just so easy to style.”

The jawline length means it is flattering for almost all face shapes, and the height at the crown will balance longer ones — while the texture softens angular features. “If you don’t feel brave enough for Arizona’s bolder bob, then look at Kiera Knightley’s take,” advises Jon. “Hers is slightly more structured, making it a style anyone can wear.”

As you work with the natural texture of your hair it is simple to style at home. And if yours is fine, it will also help to inject some much needed volume.

“There’s no need to blowdry but if your hair is curly, smooth out the mid to end-lengths first,” advises Chris. “Once dry, spray the roots with texture spray and scrunch in before building up texture at the bottom. Then back-comb a little at the crown to create subtle looking volume. Tease three or four sections with a soft bristle brush.”

“Just stay away from high-shine products,” adds Karine. “As the real key to this style is its semi-matt look.” And at least, unlike the recent resurrection of the sideburn, this is one effect of Wiggomania which is certainly a Mod con.
