If summer was the season of bronzer, one look at Diane Kruger, Drew Barrymore and Katy Perry is enough to tell you that winter will be dedicated to blusher. Bella Blissett asks top make-up artists how to get the new glow.

THE YOUTH MAKER
Apply blusher correctly and you'll take years off your face in minutes.

"Blusher should add an imperceptible warmth," says make-up artist Tania Courtney. "Use your middle finger to pat colour onto the parts of the cheek most prominent when you smile, then blend in a circular motion."

Essentials
Avoid powder — the NARS Multiple Tint in Turks and Caicos coral (for olive complexions) or Beverly Hills (best for the pale of skin) is super-sheer and easily blended. Pat onto the lips to create the wind-kissed look when blood comes naturally to the skin's surface, adding warmth. £27; narscosmetics.com

THE SUPER-SCULPTOR
The key to achieving the super-sculpt is subtlety.

Get the look
"Create contours by using a domed blusher brush to sweep a matt powder one shade darker than your foundation in an elongated shape just beneath the bone (suck in your cheeks to give you a guideline)" says Nicolas Degennes, artistic director of Givenchy make-up. "Then use a lighter powder in a pinker tone along the bone itself."

Essentials
Hourglass Illume Cream to Powder blush set in Sunset comes with two sculpting shades and the required matt velvet finish (£29; zuneta.com).
Add a pop of colour to the apples of cheeks with Givenchy's Le Prisme blush in Blooming Fuchsia (£29.50; 01932 233 824)

THE WINTER WITHSTANDER
In the sudden switch from winter outside temperatures to heated rooms, even oily skins can suffer from dryness. Fake hydration with highlights.

Get the look
Mix a light-reflecting highlighter into your usual foundation and apply all over the face — including the eyelids. A translucent "wash" of colour onto the cheeks will brighten skin, then pat further highlighter onto the very tops of cheekbones, above and below the brows, down the nose and onto the inner corners of the eyes.

Essentials
Prep and highlight with Benefit's Girl Meets Pearl rose-tinted wonder product. £24.50; benefitcosmetics.com (from next month).
Smashbox's O-Glow Blusher comes in a wetlook gel that reacts with your own skin chemistry for a natural flush. £18; debenhams.com
