UN1T, the training and conditioning studio based around the mantra ‘we train as one’, has just opened its doors in Fulham.

The slick studio means business, yet the clean monochrome décor and welcoming, motivating coaches are enough to encourage even the most fitness-phobic Londoners.

Devised by owner and former rugby professional Rob Smyth, classes promise to motivate participants by having them work as a team to complete sessions, pushing members of every level outside their comfort zone. This concept of working as a UN1T is incorporated into the trio of cardio, strength, and mobility focused classes on offer.

The class

Trooper is a team-conditioning circuit workout, which can burn up to a whopping 1000 calories depending on your athletic build and the effort you put in. It is designed to build strength, muscular endurance and mobility, pushing individual boundaries in a dynamic team setting.

What it entails

It’s essentially a 45-minute circuit workout, with class members moving around 12 stations, each with different exercises. The timing for each round at a station is determined by how quickly the participant using the prowler at the front of the studio can complete four lengths.

As you take your place at your first station after warming up, high-energy music and a lot of encouragement help you to get into the rhythm of the circuit. The variety of exercises from one station to the next is great and the time frame is short, meaning that you don’t get bored or disheartened doing too many reps.

The circuit includes floor exercises like sit ups, climbing planks and ab plate twists, as well as stints on rowing machines and elliptical cross trainers, plus weight lifting moves. The workout is strenuous but the team mentality helps to motivate you and active resting periods allow you to pace yourself without stopping.

Slacking is not an option in the Trooper class. Our trainer Matthew was uplifting and informative but, equally, not afraid to blow a whistle and push the class with five burpees upon spotting somebody stopping.

The verdict

If you want to push yourself and really get the most out of a fitness class, Trooper is the one for you. New to the fitness game, I was surprised at how far beyond my comfort zone I managed to go and left feeling that my entire body and mind had benefitted from a proper workout.

The motivation of working in a team combined with the fear of subjecting the whole UN1T to five burpees really does take away the temptation to slack. Training as one is certainly better, for me at least, than training alone. Go – and be surprised at how much you can achieve.
