How exactly does the female orgasm work?

That’s the premise of a new documentary by Channel 4, which aims to discover why some women can climax over and over again, using science to explain the mechanics of female sexual pleasure.

According to the team of experts, there exists a ‘super orgasm’, which is an entirely different type of sexual state that only some women experience.

So how does this new sexual frontier work? Here’s everything you need to know.

What is a super orgasm?

A ‘super orgasm’ occurs when a woman is able to orgasm 100 times in a row when sexually stimulated.

The scientists on documentary discovered this after monitoring five women's brains while they watched porn, analysing the impact it has on their bodies.

They found that some women were able to orgasm multiple times, while others in the group experienced just one.

How do super orgasms happen?

If you’re super orgasmic, researchers believe that you have a far greater blood flow to your genitals compared to single orgasmic women.

Much of the science is down to your biology and the way your brain reacts to sexual activity.

According to the brain scans, those who experience single orgasms will generally have low levels of alpha waves, which rise as they climax.

However, super orgasmic women will have high alpha waves throughout the arousal period – including just before orgasm – which means they experience a longer period of ‘wakeful relaxation’.

Can women teach themselves to have super orgasms?

Relaxing and teaming up with a partner you love and trust could be the answer.

One of the study’s discoveries was that women who experienced multiple orgasms released higher levels of oxytocin.

This hormone helps to bond people to their sexual partner.

The women who could achieve ‘super orgasms’ were also found to be “less inhibited and more easily aroused.”

This is because their brains remained more relaxed throughout the entire experience of intercourse, rather than worrying about other factors.

However, some of the women who appear on The Super Orgasm believe their lifestyle choices have led them to be able to achieve multiple orgasms.

Beverly, 52, claims that running tantric sex classes boosted her libido, while another participant called Nan says hers is down to regular yoga practice.

Francesca, meanwhile, thinks it's all to do with finding the right partner. She says she can only achieve super orgasms with a partner she has bonded with.

When does the documentary air?

The Super Orgasm airs on Channel 4 at 10pm on Thursday April 13
