If you’re looking at this article, you probably know all about the benefits of yoga.

You probably know that yoga can improve flexibility and posture; you probably also know it can improve symptoms associated with chronic health conditions; and you’ll definitely know that yoga can be a lifeline for people who suffer from anxiety and depression.

The problem is not the motivation to drag yourself onto a yoga mat a couple of times per week: it’s that it’s so painfully expensive.

If you’re interning, just starting out in your career or you have other financial responsibilities, you might not be able to drop a casual £80 a month on an unlimited membership at a fancy yoga studio.

But the brilliant thing about living in London, is that there’s a yoga class out there for every salary - and there are even places where you can do it for free.

So whether you’re suffering from stress, bad posture or aches and pains, read on for our guide on where to practice yoga on a budget in the capital.

Supply yoga

This pretty neighbourhood yoga spot in Lower Clapton has a warm and welcoming atmosphere with big floor to ceiling windows and potted plants peppered everywhere. Classes cost just £8 and range from your average vinyasa flow, to stretches for cyclists and relaxing candlelit evening sessions. They also run regular yoga by donation classes: where you pay what you can afford, in cash, on the day. The money you spend on yoga classes funds free yoga for community support service users across East London. Feel good, do good.

Yogarise Peckham

Run by Emma and Sean (and Misty the adorable black pug), this colourful yoga studio on the third floor of Peckham’s Bussey Building is the place to go for low-cost yoga in South East London. The large warehouse windows are a big bonus, bringing incredible light into the studios, while the walls are regularly filled with works from local Copeland Park artists. Emma and Sean run accessible community classes for yogis at all levels, asking for an honest donation from participants in return (the suggested contribution is £6). Booking is essential, so keep a keen eye on their Facebook and Twitter for upcoming classes.

East London Community Wellbeing

As well as low cost yoga classes (ranging from £5 -£10) frazzled urbanites can find a slice of calm for free in this Bethnal Green oasis. It’s based in St. Margaret’s House, a charity which programmes low-cost and free events for the community - so you might even be able to catch an art exhibition right after your yoga flow session. They offer donation yoga classes on Sunday evenings at their cosy yoga space, focusing on clearing the mind, honing technique and leading you to holistic bliss.

London School of Economics yoga

You don’t have to be a student to make the most of LSE’s fantastic yoga programme. The university, based in Temple, hold classes on Tuesday afternoons between 1-2.30pm and evening sessions on Thursday between 5-6pm. There’s a mix of vinyasa flow and dynamic power classes on offer, guaranteed to de-stress and give your body a good workout. An annual membership is a steal at £35 for non-LSE students, which entitles you to classes at the rock-bottom rate of £2 per session.

Lumi Power Yoga

Everyone’s gotta start somewhere, right? That’s the ethos behind Lumi Power Yoga’s LumiLove classes, which host cheaper sessions with yoga teachers who’ve recently completed their training.
