Sparring with robots, running next to a virtual Mo Farah and having an implant that monitors your sports technique are just some of the fitness trends of the future, experts are predicting.

A new report says technology will transform the gym experience over the next 30 years. By 2046, it predicts, fitness fanatics will have drones buzzing around them, recording their performance and enabling them to assess their technique by watching streamed footage sent to their glasses. Show-offs will be able to post their progress live online.

The report also suggests:

Technology will enable people to “run” a marathon with athletes such as Mo Farah or “cycle” with Victoria Pendleton in a virtual world.

A chip implanted in the skin will be able to monitor body function, operate equipment and correct technique.

Futurologist Ian Pearson, who compiled the Future Of Fitness report for Fitness First, said: “The rapid development of technology means we can expect to see many more people engaging in activity that will benefit the health of the nation.” Lee Matthews, the gym chain’s fitness director, said “The possibilities blow my mind.”
