If the idea of taking a razor to your lady garden has got you hiding in the bushes, you’re not alone, because recent Google statistics show a 200% increase in searches for ‘at-home bikini wax’ products. And although it can seem like a scary business, according to experts Natasha Basudev, founder of Kensington MediSpa and Rosie Khandwala, founder of Sugar Coated Wax, with a little practice and a lot of due diligence it is possible to achieve a tip-top bikini wax at home.

1. Firstly, to build up a pain threshold and swerve accidents, it’s important to “avoid attempting to wax the area until you’ve mastered the technique on other areas of the body.” says Khandwala.

2. Once at ease, ensure the hair down there is the correct length, says Basudev, “We recommend a quarter of an inch, any shorter and the wax won't grab the hair properly, increasing your chances of ingrown hairs. If the hair is too long you won't have enough control over the hair, making it more painful. Trim it with small scissors if necessary.”

3. Choosing the correct product is key. The Lycon Wax-ellence Hot Wax At Home Kit, £30, comes recommended by Basudev for its similarity to professional products, while Khandwala swears by the Sugar Coated Bikini Hair Removal Kit, £9.99, for it’s vegan formula that can be rinsed off in case of mishaps.

4. Make sure not to exfoliate the area beforehand and for optimum visibility Khandwala recommends positioning oneself in front of a mirror and “placing a raised leg on a chair or toilet seat, which opens up the area.”

5. When comfortable, both experts propose applying a small amount of wax in the direction of hair growth, making sure to hold the skin taught with one hand, which will reduce damage to the skin and minimise mistakes. As with professional waxing it is important to remember that “a swift action is vital, pulling the strip slowly will definitely not work.” says Khadwala. If wax makes it way onto an unwanted area, don’t panic, simply follow the brand’s instructions for removal.

6. Do not be tempted to have a hot shower immediately, continues Khandwala, who recommends “using a cold compress with a few drops of lavender oil to ease any pain or irritation one might get from waxing, immediately.”

Basudev also endorses nourishing skin with a hydrating oil, such as the Fur Oil, £45.90.
