How to Sunbathe, by Liz Earle

WE NEED A LITTLE BIT OF SUN ON BARE SKIN to absorb natural vitamin D, which is vital for healthy bones. Ten minutes in the sun, cream-free, once or twice a day guards against osteoporosis.

AVOID THE MIDDAY SUN when the rays are at their strongest.

USE A MINERAL-BASED SUNSCREENas synthetic sunscreens can trigger skin sensitivity. Micronised zinc and titanium dioxide are safer.

PLENTY OF WATER IS ESSENTIAL. Sipping little and often is better for the body than one large glug of water at the end of the day.

TOP UP WITH SKIN-SAVING LYCOPENE found in food such as cherry tomatoes, watermelon and apricots. It helps prevent ageing and burning.

FOR SUNBURN mix a few drops of neat lavender essential oil with a few drops of calamine lotion and apply liberally to soothe.
