I see a lot of men wearing shirts buttoned all the way up but without a tie. Did I miss a memo?

You did — three years ago. This look came in alongside thick-rimmed specs and cardigans as part of the 'geek chic' trend popularised by T4 presenters and Tinie Tempah. It doesn't suit every shirt — best avoid large or cutaway collars, for example — and it tends to look best on skinnier guys wearing informal shirts: plaid, denim or polo. It also works with a plain white shirt worn with a blazer. Shirt, £135, folkclothing.com

British supermodel David Gandy is raising money for Comic Relief with an eBay auction of one-off experiences, including tickets to Dolce & Gabbana's box at the San Siro stadium in Milan (above), a day of racing Mercedes cars, and a bespoke Thom Sweeney suit. I might just bid for that last one myself. The auctions end on Sunday. (ebay.co.uk/rednoseday)
