How vegan pork rinds became the new it-snack

Snoop Dogg calls the plant-based snack his 'favorite munchies'

If you've been searching for a new snack, and prefer yours to have a devoted celebrity following, consider getting your paws on some vegan pork rinds.

While you might be alarmed at the thought of a gas station snack made plant-based and full of protein, PigOut Pigless Pork Rinds are actually just as addictive as their meatier counterparts.

And while I've never personally tried actual pork rinds (and that's on being a lifelong vegetarian), I did get some input from carnivores. And while they said they didn't taste exactly like the real thing, they still received rave reviews when we used them to test out various hot sauces (they provided the ideal vessel). My personal favorites are BBQ and Salt and Vinegar, you'll feel like you're eating Ruffles but with a fun new texture.

And if you're wondering which celebrities have been spotted supporting the protein-heavy snack (they're made with rice, sunflower oil, pea protein and pea grits), it's a surprising crew.

Snoop Dogg calls them his favorite munchies, Ridiculousness host Rob Dyrdek shares them with his kids and actress Daniella Monet poses with them in full glam.

It's also a tour bus favorite for Dierks Bentley, Kings of Leon's Jared Followill and Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump.

But there's a reason they're so beloved - they were created by Chef Dave Anderson, who's known for his delightfully meat-like Beyond Burger and has also been cooking up plant-based bacon.

And it's not exactly hard to find, like many vegan snacks that came before it. Californians can pick it up at their local 7-Eleven, alongside a neon Slurpee. The chain is also offering plenty of other inventive vegan snacks, including Pescavore ahi tuna jerky strips and Pop Zero algae oil popcorn.

Gone are the days when plant-based proteins could only be found at a crunchy granola health food store; they've since gone mega-mainstream, embraced from everyone from rock stars to California surfer brahs.
