What would you rather listen to, your neighbours drilling holes in the wall to build an extension, or the sound of crickets chirping? An unusual choice in the city, maybe, but now there’s an app that gives those tired of being subjected to other people’s noise a selection of alternative, more natural sounds.

Unpredictable interruptions are a drawback of living in a bustling place. We can’t all afford noise-cancelling headphones — Bose’s start at £234 — so it’s great to have another option to screen out the din.

The White Noise app is free and offers 10 different sounds, including a rhythmic grandfather clock or waves crashing on the beach. It’s less distracting than simply listening to your own music, and trying to turn it up louder than the sound bothering you. Hearing just one sound, rather than the many conversations of chattering colleagues, is a wonderful relief for tired ears. So tune in and enjoy a rare moment of peace. It’s the start of a quiet revolution.

White Noise Lite is free and available to download on Androids and iPhones.
