A square head, scars and a couple of bolts through the neck are just what we like in a Halloween monster, according to a new poll naming the top horror movie creatures.

Frankenstein’s monster drew almost a third of votes from horror movie fans asked to pick their favourite vintage creature from a new Blu-ray collection called Universal Monsters: The Essential Collection.

Mary Shelley’s horrific result of a science experiment was first seen in his bolt-necked glory played by Boris Karloff in the 1931 movie, Bride of Frankenstein.

In the poll by SFX magazine, Dracula came second and The Creature from the Black Lagoon from the 1954 movie of the same name was placed third.

Top eight monsters:

1. Frankenstein's Monster

2. Dracula

3. The Creature from the Black Lagoon

4. The Wolf Man

5. The Bride of Frankenstein

6. The Invisible Man

7. The Mummy

8. The Phantom of the Opera
