London style hotspot: Ask For Janice, 50-52 Long Lane, EC1

Sip on a gin as you peruse the eclectic mix of artwork in this restaurant with a hidden basement
Cool new hangout: Ask for Janice is ideal for a post-work catch up with friends
18 July 2014

The look: Art in the city. A Chris Bracey neon, three-tiered metal wood and tiled bar, well-worn Danish leather sofas and an 80s rolodex (which holds coffee loyalty cards) help create a quirky atmosphere. Plus, there is a secret zone (a hidden bar downstairs) accessed via a door built into the brickwork. The rough and ready basement creates instant atmosphere with industrial concrete walls jazzed up with art. From an original Damien Hirst print to a Kid Acne double wall commission, there is lots to admire.

Art lover's dream: Sip on your G&T as you take in the gallery-come-eatery ambience

Who’s behind it?

Urban Leisure Group, whose other bars include The Alice House in Queen's Park and Central & Co. Food at Farringdon’s little secret is courtesy of Head Chef, Nik Prescot.

Go there if: You fancy a modern British menu of must-try dishes that evoke a culinary nostalgia in a chilled out setting.

What should I try: Small plates such as wild garlic and monk's beard are perfect for sharing. Or if you're feeling hungry try one of the large plates which include some bold choices such as nettle dumplings, butternut squash, pecorino and nuts and English asparagus, smoked yolk, onion three ways & aioli. Whatever you eat be sure to try at least one of their 45 different gins on offer.

Cheque out: Expect to pay from upwards of £35 for a three course meal and a G&T
