The London best: Bike bells

Since it is required by law to put a bell on your bike if you cycle in London, you may as well get one which works. Here are our five favourites.

1. I Love My Bike

Just in case you need to remind yourself, or your friends, how much cycling means to you, this may look plastic but it works a treat and is simple to attach.

(cyclesurgery.com, £5.99)

2. Incredibell Bellini

You could spend hours on this US website just testing the different bell chimes and choosing colours, but this teeny weeny one has a cheerful ring and will save you space. Worth the effort, say experts.

(mirrycle.com, $11-$12, depending on colour, from this US site)

3. Zefal Ping Bell

Spendthrifts, take note. This is the best cheap and cheerful option. Plain silver-coloured but lightweight with a good ping. Does what you need.

(evanscycles.com, £2.99)

4. Ding Dong Bell

Most important when choosing a bike bell is that people hear you coming. This one is simple, traditional and, most important, extra-loud. A safe bet.

(cyclechic.co.uk, £9.99)

5. Tortoise

This tiny but endearing hand-painted tortoise with a kid-friendly squeak from Pedlars shouldn’t fail to cheer up grumpy children on the cycle home from school.

(pedlars.co.uk, £20)
