A London-based street artist who has previously marked the deaths of David Bowie and Prince with artworks across the capital has painted a portrait of late boxer Muhammad Ali in north London.

Pegasus’ latest artwork, which appeared in London’s Turnpike Lane on Saturday June 4, features a black and white portrait of the sporting legend wearing a pair of red boxing gloves.

“He was the best the world has ever seen, a true inspiration to many and a strong influential voice. His portrait was already a planned feature at my upcoming show, it is unfortunate that it had to be seen first under these circumstances,” Pegasus told The Evening Standard.

The artist also painted one of Ali’s most famous quotes - “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” - alongside the monochrome portrait.

“There were so many fantastic quotes to chose from,” the anonymous artist said, “but I felt this one in particular best described his technique and talent.”

Chicago-born artist Pegasus is perhaps best known for Fallen Angel, an image of Amy Winehouse running alongside Camden Lock.

The painter has also made headlines with a stencil showing the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, as the Virgin Mary with Prince George of Cambridge as baby Jesus.

Muhammad Ali, who had long suffered from Parkinson's syndrome, died on Friday 3 June at the age of 74.

The cause of death was septic shock due to unspecified natural causes, a family spokesman said. Ali was admitted to a Phoenix-area hospital with a respiratory ailment on Monday.

"He'll be remembered as a man of the world who spoke his mind and wasn't afraid to take a chance and went out of his way to be a kind, benevolent individual that really changed the world," the family spokesman, Bob Gunnell, said at a news conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.
