It certainly seems, this week at least, that summer has come to a sudden halt.

The heatwave that we’d grown used to, almost fond of, has suddenly disappeared and we’ve been left having to rug up at work because the air conditioning is still on full.

Forecasts have predicted warm weather for this weekend, which means we’ll hopefully feel the warmth of the sun on our skin once again.

From playing leapfrog at a beach in North Yorkshire, to vintage fairground rides and packed lidos, see how Brits used to celebrate summer in the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s.
