Car review: Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost 100PS

Fiesta is still a cut above the rest, says Mike Stone
Great to drive: the new model combines excellent handling with a much improved ride

There wasn’t a lot wrong with the Ford Fiesta, which is why it has been Britain’s best-selling car for eight consecutive years. But one thing which let the side down was the cabin, which was rather fussy and looked a bit cheap.

Ford has sorted that out with the new seventh generation Fiesta, which has a vastly improved interior.

Exterior styling has been tweaked with a more cheerful front grille, and horizontal rear lights replace the old vertical units, but it is still recognisably a Fiesta. Ford’s greatest achievement with the new model is combining excellent handling with a much improved ride — it really irons out the bumps superbly for a supermini. If there is a price to pay, the steering isn’t quite as sharp as in the last model but it’s still very good.

We tried the 120PS 1.5 diesel four-cylinder in Titanium trim and the 140PS EcoBoost three-cylinder petrol engine in ST-Line and new top spec Vignale trim. All pulled smoothly and eagerly but the EcoBoost is still the pick of the bunch.

This is a great car to drive. It feels like a much bigger model and the six-speed manual gearbox is a joy to use.

It’s a supermini, so there’s not much room in the back — but as a driver’s car, it is head and shoulders above the competition.
