David Williams: Triumph’s edgy Bobber ready to rock

Star quality: Triumph’s new Bobber

With its well-publicised backing of Bike Shed shows and the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride event in London, aficionados might have guessed that — before too long — Triumph would come up with something, well, a little different.

No one anticipated just how stunning the Hinckley firm’s new Bobber model would look, however, when it was unveiled in the capital last week at The Printworks venue in Canada Water.

A host of biking celebrities were on hand to witness the wraps coming off the firm’s stylish new heritage model.

Team Triumph — racing legends including seven-times World Champion Carl Fogarty MBE and three-times world champion

Freddie Spencer — lined up against an international team of motorcycle journalists in a head-to-head indoor Bobber drag race, to add to the fun.

With a live headline set by NME award-winners The Vaccines and support from DJ Harriet Rose, the warehouse venue resounded to an eclectic mix of indie rock... and the sound of pure Bonneville hot rods racing.

Triumph haven’t released full specs and prices for the 1200cc parallel-twin model yet, but you can see how the launch went here: youtube.com. More details will be revealed later this year.

Art exhibition’s a winner

Brush with Speed, an exhibition mounted by the Royal Automobile Club, opens to the public on Monday.

Displayed over two floors at the nearby Royal Opera Arcade gallery in central London will be the work of 15 leading automotive artists, including John Ketchell, Richard Wheatland and Tim Layzell.

One of the highlights will be Jeremy Houghton’s series of paintings to the commemorate the 40th anniversary of James Hunt’s 1976 World Championship victory.

The paintings were specifically commissioned by the James Hunt Foundation and depict each of the races that Hunt won that year. The exhibition is free to attend at 5b Pall Mall until Saturday November 5.
