McLaren’s 570S Spider is not a car for shrinking violets.
A low slung, scalloped, carbon fibre projectile, the product of McLaren’s ultra-modern, surgically clean Woking factory, the 57OS is broad, but lacks the physical grossness of some hard core supercars.
It does, however, exude a modern, elegant minimalism, while its folding roof and scissor doors will keep show-offs happy. And thanks to its carbon fibre tub sub structure, this car’s body is apparently as strong as its closed, coupe cousins.
The 570S Spider has a mid mounted, 3.8 litre twin turbo V8 that pumps demented levels of power to the rear wheels through a deeply smooth and quick seven speed double-clutch transmission. For a car capable an eye watering performance it’s remarkably forgiving and safe, but still needs treating with respect.
Of course it has lovely, communicative steering, prodigious grip, OK ride, sounds rude and is huge fun.
There are even nods to practicality, from ride height adjustment for steep drives to a good sized luggage locker and further space where the roof retracts.
Demerits? Poor three quarter vision would make for occasional town driving tension, and anyone dipping into the options list would quickly see the near £165,000 570S turn into a £200k set of wheels.
For some, the 570S Spider will be all about getting noticed, but anyone who appreciates beautiful objects and elegant industrial design will find plenty to like too and yes, it offers spectacular performance and it’s extraordinary to drive.
