A whole new Porsche? That’s something you won’t have seen every day.

A whole new Porsche with no engine? That’s something you won’t have seen at all. Until now.

That’s because Stuttgart has just announced production of the all-electric Mission E. Based on its own unique platform, this four-door super-coupe will be powered by a brace of motors – giving it a total output of 592bhp.

It will have a range of at least 310 miles, thanks to advanced batteries

Electric power being what it is, the Mission E will rocket to 62mph in just 3.5 seconds.

It will also have a range of at least 310 miles, thanks to advanced batteries from Porsche’s Le Mans winning 919 Hybrid.

These are charged by an 800-volt system – which can put almost 250 miles’ worth of juice into them in a mere 15 minutes.

The car only weighs 2000kg – despite being able to seat four adults

No wonder Porsche calls it ‘a new chapter in the history of the sports car.’

Also borrowed from the 919 are lightweight construction techniques using a combination of aluminium, high-tensile steel and plastics woven with carbon fibre.

Thus the car only weighs 2000kg – despite being able to seat four adults.

Prices are some way from being finalised, but the Mission E’s most obvious rival is the Tesla Model S – which in high-performance form costs just under £90,000.

That question will be answered in due course, with the Mission E due to go on sale before 2020.
