Review: Triumph Street Triple RS

Powerful agile Street Triple RS is a real triumph, says Sarah Bradley
Explosive: the Triumph Street Triple RS

Triumph says “RS” is not an abbreviation but signifies an even higher level of spec — so we’ve christened the top-of-the-line variant the “Rocket Ship”. After all, its performance is explosive enough to thrill even the most adventurous.

It appears a decade after the original Street Triple and there are three power and torque levels, but the RS range-topper kicks out 121bhp and 77Nm — plenty to see off many rivals. It’s lighter and more agile than before, with a stiffer gullwing swing-arm to boost stability, plus higher-spec suspension, brakes and tyres.

Showa front forks and an Öhlins monoshock are standard, as is switchable ABS and a quickshifter for the six-ratio box. The five-inch TFT instrument panel is angle adjustable, while a lap timer, quintet of riding modes and five-way thumb-operated joystick complete the tech-fest. The RS’s track credentials — Moto2 will exclusively use its engine from 2019 — result in surprisingly manageable performance and handling.

It has twin-LED lights 28 times brighter than standard bulbs. Low pegs, wide bars and a well-padded seat ensure a comfortable ride, and bar-end mirrors give good rearward visibility. Just ensure you lock up it securely — its desirability will put it on the radar of London’s thieves.

Keep safe in style with retro Bullitt

Protecting your head is of paramount importance on a motorbike, but Motolegends reckons a good helmet needn’t make you look like a reject from The Last Jedi.

Bell is the go-to name for classic-style lids; its retro Bullitt uses up-to-the-minute materials and tech to give full-face protection, plus all the style and convenience of a flip-up bubble visor, chrome trim and washable perforated micro suede and leather interior.

The Bullitt comes in a variety of designs, but our favourite is the £369.99 Stripes — also available in open-face Custom 500 form. It’s the perfect lid for the motorcyclist-about-town.
