Road test: Lexus GS 300h Executive Edition

Lexus raises the bar with the elegant and refined GS, says Mike Stone
Effortless: the Lexus GS has a relaxed vibe and comes with an impressive array of safety features

They say less is more, and in the case of the new fifth generation Lexus GS, that is true.

Two hybrid drivetrains are available — a 2.5-litre petrol and electric combination with 220bhp badged 300h, and a flagship 450h, with a 3.5-litre engine plus electric motor providing 341bhp. But the less powerful car is the more appealing, and about £17,000 cheaper.

Both cars are about refinement and effortlessness and contain a list of safety equipment longer than War and Peace. But the 300h manages it better, and has a relaxed nature which suits the car well. The moment the 450h starts moving, there is a rumbling thrum from the exhausts that announces the car’s extra grunt. Even though it can accelerate briskly — 0-62mph in 5.9 secs — this is somehow not what the GS is all about. You half imagine a warning light reminding you that this is not how this car should be driven.

Early Lexus models of 25 years ago lacked character, because character comes with time. But gradually, this luxury arm of Toyota is developing its own style and doing it rather well.

One minor criticism: the brakes are so sensitive it requires some effort to use them smoothly. A bit more pedal travel would make this car easier to drive, and that, after all, is the name of the game.

The six-model range costs from £33,495 to £50,995 and is on sale now.
