Smartphone app lets you “Fill Up and Go”

UK drivers can now use a smartphone app to pay for their fuel thanks to a partnership between PayPal and Shell.

The app is compatible with iOS and Android phones and Windows phones are set to follow.

After registering the Shell Motorist app and pairing it with a PayPal account, you can use the service at Shell filling stations. On arrival at the pump, you remain in the car, open the app and tap on ‘Fill Up and Go’.

You then choose a maximum spend and scan the QR code at the pump. With the phone left in the car, simply refuel when the ‘start refuelling’ message appears.

Dispensing stops automatically when the limit is reached and if you take less than the maximum limit, you will only be charged for the amount taken.

Your transaction history and receipts as well as Shell Drivers’ Club loyalty points are all available and visible through the app.

Shell says that half of its participating stations will be offering the service by the close of summer.

Michael Hominick, retail marketing manager at Shell UK says the initiative provides customers with “the flexibility and convenience of paying without having to leave their car.” He also points out that customers can still use Shell stores to pay and buy other items but with the benefit of “reduced queues”.

The system, according to Shell, must only be used from inside a car. A spokesperson said: “Shell has worked with the London Fire Brigade on this payment solution and its implications for mobile use on the forecourt. They’ve confirmed in-vehicle use is safe.”
