Olivia Wilde and Margaret Zhang wear same dress to Met Gala

Although the Met Gala’s head honcho Anna Wintour famously vets all outfits ahead of the big night, it didn’t stop an awkward run in between Don’t Worry Darling director Olivia Wilde and Vogue China editor-in-chief Margaret Zhang from happening.

On last night’s red carpet, 39-year-old Wilde wore a white, floor-length gown with a gold violin-shape emblazoned on the front. It was designed by Chloé’s current designer Gabriela Hearst, who told Vogue she loved “the musical inspiration”  and the “surrealistic touch” of Lagerfeld’s original 1983 design from which the dress was based on.

“There was something quite timeless that we could bring back to the Met Gala in 2023. We made it a gala dress instead of a cocktail dress, and I think it worked beautifully,” she continued, explaining why she altered the original black cocktail dress’ design.

However it appears Zang had a similar idea and also referenced the 1983 design, opting to also make the dress floor length but in black and with an added cape.

"They’re so brave for not going home immediately," one person tweeted, adding: “RIP to whoever is getting fired for this.”

Considering the theme of this year’s Met Gala was all about celebrating the late Chanel, Fendi and Chloé creative director Karl Lagerfeld’s designs, the chances that two people would wear the same gown are relatively high. At least compared to previous themes like Camp: Notes on Fashion  or Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination that are far more abstract and thus open to wider interpretation.

But as one Twitter user commented, “They still both look GORGEOUS.”
