Best for chocoholics

An affogato is traditionally a shot of espresso poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream (affogato means drowned in Italian), but — as this is one of London’s best chocolatiers — here you can choose between coffee or super-rich hot chocolate (from £3.50). Try to get a seat in the pretty Moorish-style courtyard garden.

This neighbourhood spot is good for much more than an affogato (£4). Half champagne bar (Amuse Bouche) and half restaurant (Claude’s Kitchen), its short menu is packed with delicious summery options, such as cured herring with pickled cucumber, or artichoke with Jersey royals.

Affogato might as well have been invented for when you’re flagging mid shopping trip and need a hit of caffeine and sugar (£5.50). Slightly dangerously, you can also get a shot of Frangelico or Amaretto added to the espresso here (£7.50), which, while absolutely delicious, could lead to some extravagant purchases.
