London design hotspot: The Ivy bar

In June, the iconic Ivy restaurant in the West End underwent a major renovation with stunning results.

One of the most striking new addtitions was the installation of a central dining bar carved out coral onyx – our latest design hotspot.

The look: The Ivy’s new bar is nothing if not dramatic. Taking the place of the former fireplace, the bar is fashioned out of coral hued onyx, surrounded by hand-hammered brass tiles and finished with a stone top. It offers the perfect vantage point to soak up the opulence of the room – not to mention people watch.

Added jazz comes from the bespoke columns wrapped in mirror, Lalique-designed glass lamps and bar stools upholstered in a winning mix of red leather and pink mohair. In short, it's a magpie's dream with the new shiny bar jostling for attention with older features such as the colourful stained glass windows.

Who’s behind it: Martin Brudnizki, the man responsible for a whole roster of sexy London establishments including Annabel’s to Dean St Townhouse and the new Sexy Fish. He spoke to the Standard earlier this year about the Ivy's revamp: “There was nothing wrong with the food, the service, the stained-glass windows, the timber panelling or the art. What didn’t work was the old-fashioned layout. You came straight into that awkward little bar and into the main dining room where the far right-hand side was called Siberia because no one wanted to sit there. Now all the tables are as good as each other.”

What should I try: Start with a Laperous: an elegant champagne cocktail stirred with St Germain elderflower liqueur and Cherry blossom-infused Lillet Rose. But don’t just stay for a drink, bar dining is fully encouraged here and as anyone who’s anyone knows, it’s the place to dine. The Shepherd’s pie is a recurring favourite from the classic mains, but we loved the Spaghettini with Atlantic prawn, crab, chilli and garlic – simple, but delicious. Pudding is a must here – order anything with the brown butter ice-cream.
