Regular emoticon users, it seems, are largely a cheerful bunch - or so those on Twitter would have us believe.

The social media network has polled the most frequently used emoticons over its service, and the results are surprisingly uplifting.

Not only have we been tweeting more emojis than ever before, but we’re opting for smiling, happy faces over skulls or frowns.

The most popular symbol among Twitter's 320 million users, including 15 million in the UK was revealed to be the ‘tears of joy’ emoji. The popular icon has been used a whopping 6.6 billion times over the past 12 months.

And it’s no surprise really, considering it recently took the title for Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year.
