The Crush: Dev Hynes

The music producer who's got us in a spin
Cool guy: Dev Hynes

In case you were wondering, Crush is actually quite cool. We go to pop-ups on rooftops, eat Peruvian food and watch The X Factor ironically. So obviously we totally knew who Dev Hynes was before he went mainstream this year, with the TED lecture he gave on Anxiety and the Gap Christmas campaign he’s now modelling in. TBH, Crush practically discovered the guy. But for those of you with your fingers a little further from the pulse, Mr Hynes was in a band called Blood Orange and is now mainly a music producer. But like, a really, really good one.

Born in Texas, raised in Ilford and now living in New York, he can turn pop stars into hipster hits with his special brand of beat-making (yes, that’s a thing) and songwriting for the original Sugababes, Britney Spears and, most recently, Jessie Ware. He also has a winning smile and a very natty dress sense — we love a grown man in dungarees. He’s tough, too, standing his ground in a Twitter spat with Beyoncé’s ballsy sis Solange last year over how much credit he should have got for her album (thankfully, he didn’t share a lift with her). All we wish is that he’d come back to England for good — or maybe distance is a good thing: Dev suffers from synesthesia, which means he sees sounds as colours… and Crush’s swooning sighs are a very uncool shade of red right now.
