For picnics in the park

Chicken Shop

Chicken Shop is now doing picnic packs containing a whole rotisserie chicken and three sides (the crinkle-cut fries are a must), all tucked into a jute bag with napkins etc (£25). The free-range chickens are marinated overnight then roasted, and come hot or smokey (from £4 for a quarter chicken to eat in).

For spice fiends

Spit & Roast

In a roving street-food van (called Bessie), specialising in rotisserie chicken and dangerously good buttermilk fried chicken, you’ll find Spit & Roast popping up all over London. The chicken bap comes with an apple and celeriac slaw and brilliant Korean-style hot sauce (£6).

For a perfect roast

The Jugged Hare

With an eight-spit rotisserie on show in the open kitchen, plus a charcoal grill, this is where you’ll find perfectly roasted meat (the menu changes often; roast chicken is around £16). Somewhat smarter than your average pub — think red leather and dark wood — it’s also a great place for interesting wines by the glass, as well as ales.
