Cool place of the week: Greenbank Hotel, Falmouth

The Greenbank began life back in the 17th century asa sailor's pub with rooms

The final episode of Poldark airs at the end of the month, but you can combat withdrawal symptoms by booking a break at Falmouth’s legendary Greenbank Hotel which began life back in the 17th century as a sailor’s pub with rooms above where captains would sleep between voyages.

Set right on the banks of the river Fal, with sweeping views across the estuary through the floor-ceiling windows of its lounge and many rooms, this is the ideal place to enjoy the drama of Poldarkian winter storms without getting wet or cold, preferably accompanied by a nip of Cornish-made Dead Man’s Fingers rum.

The rooms are comfy, painted in heritage shades of pearl, pewter and charcoal, sometimes with a single wall of bright hipster wallpaper but never too flamboyant – the river views are the star turn here. Home comforts include a teapot, kettle, locally grown looseleaf Tregothnan tea and shortbread.

Falmouth was not used as a filming location in the BBC series, the town is referenced frequently and remains the most Poldarkian of Cornish ports, with Georgian pubs hidden down riverside alleyways and a history of maritime trade, exploration and piracy brought to life in the National Maritime Museum.

It’s not even that unusual to spot locals walking down the high street in a tricorn. Poldark film locations can also easily be visited – like Kynance Cove on the Lizard (Ross’s ‘Nampara’) with its sea caves and offshore islets, Porthcurno (where Demelza and Ross walk in a dream sequence) and Gunwalloe, also on the Lizard, where the night-time wrecking scene was filmed.
