Hats off to New York's Refinery hotel

The 197-room hotel opened last month in an old millinery factory in New York's garment district

In the heart of New York’s Garment District, steeped in industrial and fashion history, the independently owned 197-room Refinery Hotel opened last month in a former early 20th-century millinery factory.

The look is pure industrial chic, with high ceilings, dark brushed oak hardwood floors and hand-made wool rugs. Multiple nods to the building’s past range from the lobby, with its display of hat-making tools, and writing desks designed to resemble an early 1900s sewing machine in certain categories of room.

Cocktails are served in Winnie’s, the quirky tea lounge — named after the woman who served tea to workers here in the early 1900s. A rooftop bar is sectioned off into three parts — indoor, outdoor and a bit of both with a retractable glass roof and using wood salvaged from the original building.
