It’s all happening on Ibiza this month, as the party season opens and the Hard Rock Hotel launches on Playa d’en Bossa, with a restaurant rumoured to be the most expensive in the world. But over on the north-west coast of the island, near San Miguel, the five-star Hacienda Na Xamena, a member of Small Luxury Hotels, has just opened with a more laid-back approach.

Actually, it just re-opened, as the cliff-top hotel first opened back in the Seventies, when electricity and running water were scarce on the island, helping its hippy vibe.

The new look brings more contemporary interiors across the 77 rooms and suites, with polished cement floors, whitewashed walls with floor-to-ceiling windows and Jacuzzi baths nearby.

Three restaurants will combine local, seasonal produce and the La Posidonia spa (named after the native seaweed) will dole Dr Hauschka treatments in addition to the Cascadas Suspendidas — eight interconnected saltwater lagoons — and yoga. Away from the glamorous seclusion, new boat trips are on offer, including a glass bottomed eight-seater. Being a hippy never looked so good.
