Insurers play by the rules with delay payout

Waiting game: many flights to New York were delayed at Christmas
10 April 2012
My wife and I were due to fly from Heathrow to New York on December 19, but got caught by the snow and were delayed by four days. Our insurance company has offered a final settlement of £160 each. Is this an acceptable amount for the delay we encountered? - Christopher Antoniades, Islington

This is a tricky question to answer without sounding a tad harsh. If you regard £160 each as unacceptable, I'm afraid I can't see where else you might seek recompense.

You were two of the million or so passengers whose journeys were disrupted following a snowfall at Heathrow a week before Christmas. Over the following five days - among the busiest in terms of bookings - 4,000 flights were cancelled.

Many people abandoned their journeys. Under EU rules they were entitled to a full refund of their fares. But when the reason for cancellation is beyond the airlines' control, as it clearly was, the European regulations do not oblige the airlines to pay cash compensation.

If you were stuck at Heathrow for a significant length of time and the airline did not provide meals, then you could claim for those. Likewise, the typical travel insurance policy offers a token payment of £20 for each complete 12 hours of delay - exactly what your insurers have offered.
