Moor than impressed with Morocco

Reflected glory: the Jacques Garcia-designed Selman Hotel
10 April 2012

DESTINATION: MOROCCO

After three years of construction, the Selman Hotel, a Moorish-style palace in Marrakech, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, is set to open in January, joining a band of other high-end hotel openings there.

The privately-owned Selman will have 56 rooms and suites and five private riads with garden, pool and butler service.

Due to the owner's passion for Arabian horses the 15-acre grounds will also hold his private collection of 16 pure-bred horses, available for hire by guests, in individual stables conceived by French designer Jacques Garcia.

For the hotel interiors, Garcia, who has recently revamped La Mamounia in Marrakech and is also famed for the Hôtel Costes in Paris, has followed a Moorish theme including detailed mosaics decorating rooms and on high arches and columns.

Two restaurants, one fine dining with a signature chef and one all-day dining restaurant, the 'S' Pavillion overlooking the paddocks, will also be accompanied by a library bar which extends into an open terrace and the main pool bar. The spa - managed by wellness expert Dominique Chenot - will have 15 treatment rooms, indoor and outdoor pools, Turkish bath, sauna and gym. Doubles from £310 B&B, glahotels.com
