The beguiling city of Madrid is on the up, with its crop of new markets, restaurants and hotels encompassing its rich culinary tradition.
The four-star NH Collection Eurobuilding, sounding more like an EU meeting venue than a hotel, has just been spruced up following a “multi-million” pound investment and mixes cuisine and technology in equal measures.
Calling itself a Living Lab, the 431-room hotel pioneers wireless charging of mobile devices and video support via tablets — guests can speak to reception face-to-face from the comfort of their room (I probably wouldn’t do this first thing in the morning). An LED vault screen over the lobby (the largest in Europe) projects digital artwork. There’s a five-star floor with VIP lounge, while the rest are labelled Brilliant Basics with rain shower heads, next-generation LED televisions and Nespresso machines.
But food isn’t forgotten among all this gadgetry, with Michelin-starred chefs aplenty. David Muñoz has relocated his edgy DiverXO serving Iberian-Asian fusion, the only three Michelin-starred restaurant in Madrid, to a larger space within the hotel while the two Michelin-starred Paco Roncero and mixologist Diego Cabrera have opened DOMO by Roncero & Cabrera as well as DOMO Lounge & Terrace by Cabrera. Completing the culinary quartet is the 99 Sushi Bar.
