New Year's Eve in London is a mixed bag.

Sure, the fireworks are nice but tube delays, crowds and constant threat of rain can put a dampener on things. Best to pack up the champagne and head for the country.

Staycations are fuss-free. Just grab a group of friends and - this is the UK - pack for all weather conditions. From a bohemiam cottage on the Cornish coast to a sleek cottage on the banks of the River Yealm in Devon, there's a staycation for everyone.

Here are eight of the best staycations you can book last minute.

1. The Old Millhouse, Scotland

Cool Stays

Just eight miles away from Edinburgh, this 18th century mill house is surrounded by 3.5 acres of landscaped gardens. It sleeps 10, so you can indulge in long, rambling walks (and naps by the fire after).

2. Culls Cottage, Cotswolds

Cool Stays

This renovated cottage sleeps eight and is completely eco-friendly. It has stunning original features throughout - so it'll feel like a special staycation - but it's been updated so it will be a comfortable trip too.

3. Aphrodite, Cornwall

Unique Homestays

Cornwall doesn't have to be just for summer. This coastal chapel sleeps four and promises unforgettable views. Waking up the sound of the sea sounds like a good way to start 2017.

4. Park Farm House, Cannington

Airbnb

This grade II listed 16th century house is seriously luxe - and it sleeps 16. Its beautiful interiors will make a stunning backdrop for New Year's Instagrams - and its Aga is ideal for a special meal on the 31st (and the fry-up the morning after).

5. Siren cottage, Cornwall

Unique Homestays

This bohemian cottage is the perfect romantic getaway for a couple over New Year's. It's so beautifully stylish inside that you might not ever leave. But if you do, you can for a bracing run on the beach below.

6. Little Bay cottage, Scotland

Airbnb

This private cottage sleeps five and looks over its own loch and the surrounding national park and mountains. If you're lucky, it will snow and you can welcome in 2017 with your own winter wonderland.

7. Beauport Cottage, Devon.

Unique Homestays

On the bank of the River Yealm is this idyllic home which sleeps six. Come for the morning mist which you can enjoy from the stylish inside (there's a log burning stove in the kitchen). The main draw? There's a walkway to the local gastropub.

8. The Chestnuts, Cotswolds

Cool Stays

This cottage - which sleeps 10 - is a converted cottage, dating back to the 1850s. Bonus points for the nearby medieval village of Shilton.
